Assize Courts

Bodmin  - County Assize Courts

Visit the County Assize Courts then move onto Bodmin Gaol, built in 1778 it was the first prison to have individual cells, and was the scene of 55 executions mostly in public. It was the site of the last public execution in Britain in 1909. Bodmin was the only Cornish town to be mentioned in the Doomsday book of 1086 and the Doomsday book was housed in Bodmin Gaol during the First World War, as were the Crown Jewels.

Crownhill Fort

Crownhill Fort

Crownhill Fort has great importance today, as the last of this country’s true castles and the most important of the great Victorian forts built to defend Plymouth from attack by land as well as sea. The Fort’s buildings contain displays where you can experience a soldier’s life in the re-created Victorian and WWII barrack rooms, Victorian sergeant’s quarters and guard room. You can learn about the story of the Fort and Plymouth’s local regiment, the Devon and Dorsets.

Devonport

Devonport Naval Base

Plymouth has been used as a naval base since the days of Edward I and his wars with France and the port was vital in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. Devonport Dockyard, originally known as Plymouth Dock, on the Hamoaze (the name for part of the River Tamar), is the largest Naval dockyard in Western Europe and dates from 1693 when a wet and dry dock was built, followed by the construction of workshops, stores, and more docks.

Plymouth Gin is a gin with unrivalled heritage. One of only a handful of surviving gins from the 18th Century, it has been distilled for over 200 years in Plymouth at the same site now England’s oldest working distillery. In the early 1800s it became the Gin of the Royal Navy and was consequently taken to all corners of the world.
