Ilfracombe’s coastal charms continue to grow
Plans are gathering pace for a state-of-the-art watersports centre at Larkstone Cove. North Devon Council is applying for funding from the Coastal Communities Fund to deliver the new centre, which will provide a hub for local watersports enthusiasts, with a new slipway, boatyard, teaching space and café.
Ilfracombe has always had plenty of choice for food lovers, but recently the town’s reputation as a ‘foodie’ destination has really taken off. Last month Thomas Carr, of Ilfracombe's Thomas Carr at the Olive Room, was awarded a Michelin star, putting Ilfracombe firmly on the culinary map.
Damien Hirst’s ‘Verity’ statue at Ilfracombe Pier is proving as popular as ever, and work is now underway to re-landscape the viewing platform with an information lectern, seating and lighting to further enhance the visitor experience.
A number of projects are on track to build on Verity’s success, many of which focus on supporting the tourist and fishing industries, central to the town’s economy. And with the Ilfracombe Coastal Communities Team working on an economic plan for the town to boost shopping, transport and other services for visitors, the town looks set to flourish in the coming months.
