Devon

Exeter
Sir Thomas Bodley

Born on the corner of Gandy Street and the High Street in Exeter in 1545, Bodley went onto found the Bodleian Library in Oxford, one of the earliest public libraries in Europe, using much of his own money.
He was knighted in 1604 and died in 1613.

Edwin Lutyens British architects, designed many English Country Houses. Famous for his Arts & Crafts style changing to a more Classical style in 1900's including Castle Drogo, Exeter which is the last castle to have been ever built in Britain.
Plymouth
Sir Joshua Reynolds

The 18th century painter and first President of the Royal Academy, was born in Plympton, Devon.
J M W Turner Turners stayed in the Tamar Valley and produced a number of sketches and small side. Watercolours of the area as well as his famous oil painting "Crossing the Brook" which portrays New Bridge at Gunnislake and the surrounding valley seen from high above Blanchdown Farm on the Devon.
Ron Goodwin Born in Plymouth, is best remembered for his rousing film scored and probably hi best known work was his music for the film "Battle of Britain".
Beryl Cook Famous for her humorous paintings of people, lives and works in Plymouth where she remains fascinated by this naval port which is full of pubs, fishermen and sailors.
Robert Lenkiewicz A man either loved or loathed, being one of those rare individuals who would always elicit a strong opinion from people. A prolific painter portraying the lives of people across society. He lived in Cornwall & Plymouth and is one of the South West's most celebrated artists.
Plymouth City Art Gallery A large and important fine and decorative art collections across varying media. Works by Sir Joshua Reynolds.
Torbay
Thomas Luny Born in Teignmouth, joined the Royal Navy at the beginning of the French Revolutionary Wars in 1793-1810. He had to retire due to rheumatoid arthritis. His illness lead him to be confined to a wheelchair, due to the loss of the use of hands. To paint thereafter he had to strap paint brushed to his hands or use his wrists.

Mounts Bay
The Penlee Gallery Changing exhibition of the work of the Newlyn School of Artists, which started the whole Cornish Art scene off. Most of the local museums specialise in one subject, an exception to this is Penlee Gallery & Museum which covers pre history and the evolution of social life and culture in Cornwall. The museum also possesses an art collection, focusing on the Newlyn School which includes famous artists such as Stanhope Forbes.
Newlyn Art Gallery This was opened over a hundred years ago and since its opening has exhibited many local artists which it continues to do.
